Wedding Planning

Hello everyone 🙂

Today I continue the Wedding Story with Part 2: Wedding Planning.  Today I will begin the story of my experience with the planning process. If you have ever planned a wedding you would know it is not easy at all. If not: well, you have no idea of the tiny little things you need to think about.

I want to start with the fact that we wanted our wedding to happen as soon as possible. Since I knew George is The One, I did not want to wait a second longer to make it official. I realize that some people are engaged for years and are just as happy but this type of arrangement is just not my thing. After an extremely complicated comparison of calendars, annual holidays, exams and various other date tracking resources, we finally picked a date: 18th of April, 2015. This date was not symbolic in any way: we just wanted to have our celebration on a day which all our friends and family would be able to attend. Of course, that convenient date left us with just about 8 months to plan everything.

This was a first wedding for both of us, so naturally we were completely clueless on how to tackle it. Therefore, we did what every average person would do: we Googled. Once you type ‘wedding planning’ in the modern fountain of knowledge you are doomed to get into the center of an avalanche of:

a.horror, b.too-good-to-be-true or c. too-expensive-to-ever-happen stories. I don’t even want to mention the amount of adverts out there.

Basically, wedding planning is an emotional roller coaster: I didn’t even know I was capable of such a large spectrum of emotions at the same time. You experience panic, some fear, loads of anxiety and then you suddenly jump to happiness, excitement and ‘Oh My God, I can’t wait!’ This continues through the whole process but is also that amazing thrill that keeps you going.

Anyway, back to the organization… I am one of those lucky girls, whose mothers live for the opportunity to organize events. I guess you might have doubts on whether a mom could be overpowering sometimes: she can and she is, but 1. The whole organization depended a lot on her since I live abroad and 2. Even though it is a cliché, ‘Mommy knows best’ :). However, even though we split the responsibility, just a month after we set the date, our wedding fairytale was becoming everything but a fairytale. Mom was tense, nervous and a bit angry, I was getting hysterical because I felt that it wasn’t worth all the nerves and my George didn’t understand what the fuss was all about. We started to chaotically buy stuff just for the sake of feeling that we accomplish something .We also started to look at venues. That is when it got really scary. Since Sofia is a relatively small capital city, the restaurants that can fit 180 people are just a few. And believe me they are fierce in trying to get you! By the way, you read correctly, our guest list contained the humble count of 180 people. (No pressure…) After yet another venue viewing where we heard all about the positives of one venue, compared to its competitors, we hit our desperation rock bottom. That was one of the moments that strengthened my belief in luck yet again. (You can read my thoughts on luck here.) A very random phone call from a family friend helped us to find our Fairy Godmother also known as the Wedding Planner! Without her help, we would have never had our picture perfect wedding. Anyway, I want to stop here but I would tell you more about my amazing Wedding Planner in the future posts of The Wedding Story.  I would love to hear your opinions on what you would do for your wedding: organize it on your own or expect help from relatives? Hire a wedding planner or experience the thrill of doing everything on your own? I am thinking of writing a post on the reasons for hiring a wedding planner versus the reasons for organizing everything on your own. Let me know what you think in the comments :).  For everyone who might have chosen beautiful Bulgaria as a wedding destination and especially for Bulgarian brides-to-be I recommend Niki Mitev’s wedding blog. It is an excellent starting point. I would also recommend Funtime Weddings and Events, where I found my wedding planning guardian angel. Finally ladies, please do not underestimate Pinterest – the ultimate inspiration source! I have borrowed so many ideas from there and they turned out beautifully!

I will be back on Wednesday with another #OutfitOfTheWeek. Have an awesome week and don’t forget to make your life a glamorous story!

Lots of love,

Antoniya xx
