Hello everyone and happy Friday!
With just a week to go until Christmas, it is literally everywhere around us! Today I want to tell you a bit about a celebration that is not related to the festive season for a change. As I mentioned in my previous post, I was pretty busy last week with an event that I have been planning for a few months: our friends’ baby shower! They are expecting a baby boy and he is the first child that I will be able to actually see growing up. For my biggest regret all my baby nieces and nephews are back in Bulgaria and I basically see them change via photos. Thank God we’ve got smartphones! With this little man I will be able to observe every tiny little change he goes through and naturally I was super excited to plan his baby shower! Today I want to share with you my experience and give you some useful tips in case you ever have to plan a baby shower 🙂
Taking the Responsibility
Planning a baby shower is quite a responsibility- you need to make sure that everything goes perfect for the mom and dad-to-be. The first thing you need to do is to make sure they actually want to have a baby shower. This is why I recommend that you discuss it with the parents before you put all your efforts into the organization of a party. Imagine if they prefer to keep everything more private and all your good intentions are suddenly just causing them discomfort. Once you agree upon the matter, I think it is a good idea to also discuss the date. You don’t want the mom-to-be too close to her due date because that would definitely cause her loads of distress, but you also want her to have a belly for everyone to see. My friend has two more months to go so I think the timing was perfect 🙂 I don’t suggest you do a surprise baby shower- stress, even if positive, is not good for the future mom.
What comes naturally after the setting of the date is…
Ask the parents to give you a list of people they want to invite. Nowadays you have all the social media channels on your hands so it will be easy to get in touch with people. Ask them to RSVP as soon as possible and keep them updated with regular posts or messages. I did everything via a Facebook Group and a few Messenger chats.
The next bit to think of is…
This is one of the most important components of the baby shower! You can never go wrong with a It’s a Boy/Girl blue/pink theme but I think it is nicer if you manage to think of something original that will make them feel special. In my case, I chose the Avengers as the theme. I know that they are big fans of the Marvel universe and it was even running through their wedding theme, so I was sure they will love it. After you decide on a theme, you need to think of your party supplies: napkins, cups, paper plates, baloons, ribbons, table clothes, decorations. Those can all be find on eBay. If you have a graphic design flare, you can even do some bits and pieces on your own 🙂 My favorite decoration though was the nappy cake- a super fun and yet quite impressive center piece. I built mine from scratch but you can also order them from various websites. Building it on your own is 1. a fun experience and 2. way easier on your budget. You should also think of some fun games to play along with some party food to munch on 🙂 In terms of games, I really recommend a blind-folded baby food testing- super fun for all the watchers 🙂 For the food, just go with the good old crisps and sweets- they are always popular during a party.
A baby shower is not really complete without…
Ask the parents to make a list and let the guest know what they need. Make sure to synchronize the presents between the guests. You don’t want your friends to end up with 5 baby bouncers 🙂
Okay, so this kind of covers most of the planning process! I realize it turned out quite long but I tried to condense 3 months of planning in just one post. If you need any advice or you have any questions, please drop me a line. I am happy to share my experience with you. Have you ever planned a baby shower? What did you find the most challenging? Let me know in the comments!
Have a lovely weekend everyone! I can’t believe it’s Christmas next week! 🙂
